1.  Water Meter Keeps Ticking With No Water Running in the House

One telltale sign that your home has a hidden water leak can be determined by observing the meter outside of your house. This meter should only keep track of water usage when you are actively using water. However, if there is a leak, the meter will continue running, giving a false reading of your household's usage for which you will be charged by the water company.

To test whether or not the water meter is ticking away, make sure all fixtures and appliances are turned off in your house. Then, wait a few minutes, and look at the meter. If you see that it is still registering water usage, you most likely have a hidden leak.

2.  Musty Odor Is Present and Gets Stronger as Time Goes By

Another sign that could indicate a hidden water leak in your house is the presence of a musty odor that was not there before. At first, this odor may be faint and only detectable in a small area of your house.

However, as time goes by, you may find that the smell gets stronger. If you have a water leak, the damp wood and drywall will start to smell. And, since the interior of the walls stays dark and moist, mold will start to grow and contribute to the odor.

If you detect a musty odor indicating the growth of hidden mold and/or you find that your water meter keeps registering running water even when no fixtures or appliances are on, you most likely have a hidden water leak in your house.
